PRAYAGRAJ, Jan. 17 -- A 25-year-old woman with her six-month-old infant died after she allegedly jumped into a well in a village in the trans-Yamuna area of Prayagraj on Friday, police said. Her husband and brother-in-law have been arrested in connection with the case. The incident took place under the Kaundhiyara police station limits. According to police, the woman had come to her in-laws' house from her parental home on Thursday evening. Later that night, she reportedly had an argument with her husband. On Friday morning, when the woman and her infant daughter were not seen for a long time, family members began searching for them. Their bodies were later found floating in a well about 50 metres from the house. Kaundhiyara station house officer said police reached the spot after receiving information. With the help of villagers, the bodies were taken out of the well after nearly three hours. The woman's maternal family alleged that she was repeatedly harassed and beaten by her husband, Shivbabu, and brother-in-law, Laxman Patel. They claimed the in-laws were pressuring her to hand over compensation of nearly Rs.10 lakh that she had received from the government after the death of her first husband three years ago. Police said the woman was first married in 2018. Her first husband died in a road accident. She has a three-year-old daughter from her first marriage, who is safe with family members.
