LUCKNOW, June 23 -- The southwest monsoon is likely to cover the entire state in the next 48 hours as conditions were favourable for its progress, weathermen said. This year, monsoon arrived in U.P. on its scheduled date, which is June 18, and within four days, made it a rain surplus state. "After entering the state from Sonbhadra on June 18, the southwest monsoon has covered most parts of the state, except the northwest. As most of the rain has been confined to the southern part of the state under the influence of a low-pressure area, the monsoon's position in Uttar Pradesh remained unchanged during the last 48 hours," said Atul Kumar Singh, a senior scientist at the Lucknow Met office. "The northern limit of monsoon (NLM) is passing through Agra, Rampur, Dehradun, Shimla, Pathankot and Jammu. And with this low pressure area now over Uttar Pradesh and the east-west weather trough formed in the middle troposphere from Pakistan to Bangladesh and another trough in the lower troposphere passing through the state, along with other favorable synoptic conditions, there is a possibility of increase in the distribution of rainfall in the state in the coming days," Singh said. As such, there is a possibility of heavy/very heavy rainfall at some places in the northern part of the state along with thunder/lightning during the next 3-4 days. During the last 24 hours, Jhansi experienced a maximum of 27.8 mm of rainfall; Hamirpur 20 mm; Kanpur City 14.9 mm; Najibabad 14 mm; Orai 12 mm and Muzaffarnagar 11 mm. The state capital witnessed 12.2 mm of rainfall with temperatures hovering between 33.9 and 26.6 degrees Celsius....
