Lucknow, July 9 -- The rains may have brought relief from the scorching heat but it has also exposed Lucknow's outdated and fragile electricity infrastructure, worsened by chronic official indifference. On Monday night, power outages left thousands in the dark across multiple areas. Frustrated and sleepless, angry residents gathered at the Dubagga power substation, demanding answers and action. By Tuesday, the rains had further battered the power grid, triggering another wave of breakdowns and prolonged blackouts across the city. From IIM Road's Ahibaranpur to Indira Nagar, Mahanagar, Bhithauli, and LDA Colony, residents endured power cuts ranging from three to over five hours. While officials blamed the weather, a resident Shyam Kumar said that it is the department's poor planning, absence of emergency response, and a lack of communication as no one picks up the phone from JE to executive engineer. "Every year during the monsoon, the same thing happens. Why hasn't anything changed?" asked Ravi Tiwari, a resident of Aliganj. The power was out for nearly four hours in Aliganj on Tuesday evening. In Bhitauli and nearby areas along Sitapur Road, a major 132kV substation failure left residents without electricity for over four hours. In Nishatganj and Mahanagar, the situation wasn't much better, with residents reporting food spoilage, health concerns, and rising frustration due to repeated, unannounced outages.
