Mohsin's ton helps UP enter U23 State A Trophy final once again
LUCKNOW, Nov. 30 -- Ali Zafir Mohsin on Saturday smacked his maiden century of the season to help former champions Uttar Pradesh march into the final of the Men's U23 State A Trophy, notching up a facile five-wicket win over Rajasthan, at the BKC Ground in Mumbai.
Lucknow's Mohsin, son of former Ranji Trophy cricketer Mohsin Raza, struck 93-ball 108 with the help of 12 boundaries and six sixes to guide Uttar Pradesh romp home in 40.1 overs while chasing Rajasthan's 242.
Uttar Pradesh lost the wickets of Adarsh Singh (5) and keeper-batter Chaitanya Parashar (3) in quick succession to struggle at 2/38 in 6.1 overs at one stage. But it didn't make any difference to Mohsin and fellow opener Swastik Chikara as the two kept hammering Rajasthan bowlers all-around the ground while stitching together 104 runs for the third wicket.
One of the finds of the UPTwenty20 League in the last three seasons, Chikara showed his class for the first time this season in a big way, hitting 61-ball 65, which contained seven boundaries and three sixes.
Skipper Sameer Rizvi, who made it to the Playing XI only after landing in Mumbai late on Friday night after hitting a match-winning 30 in just 14 balls with the help of two boundaries and two sixes for UP against J&K in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at Kolkata, could score just three in nine balls before being caught and bowled by Himanshu Nehra.
Mohsin, who couldn't get a match even when he was with the under-19 team a couple of years back, was class apart for Uttar Pradesh on Saturday as he was ruthless to Rajasthan bowlers and remained almost unstoppable. Though he got out in the 33rd over after being caught by Sachin Lakheswar off Chetan Sharma, it was too late for Rajasthan bowlers to take control of the situation.
All-rounder Prashant Veer along with Ritik Vats then completed the formality without being separated. Whereas Veer struck one boundary and two sixes in his unbeaten 39-ball 34, Vats played a perfect role as second fiddle, scoring an unbeaten 11 in 21 balls.
Earlier, it was a good toss to win for Uttar Pradesh as young pacer Ankur Sharma ripped through Rajasthan's top order, reducing the side to 3/37 in 10.1 overs. Meerut's Sharma removed Sachin Lakheswar (4), Sumit Godara (17) and keeper-batter Amol Chelani (0) in quick succession before spinner Kartik Yadav had the wicket of Chetan Sharma (19) to leave rivals struggling at 4/48 in 15.2 overs.
Even Himanshu Nehra (28) and skipper Rohan Vijay Rajbhar (52) tried to stirch the innings, adding 45 runs for the fifth wicket and later Karan Lamba (65) and M Choudhary (32) added 72 runs for sixth wicket but Rajasthan couldn't post a big total.
Besides Ankur, fellow pacer Vijay Kumar took 2/37, whereas Prashant Veer, Kartik Yadav and Ritik Vatsa shared three wickets between them as Rajasthan scored 239/9. Now, in the final on Monday, Uttar Pradesh, who had the title in 2023-24 season, will be taking on Tamil Nadu who defeated Bengal by 101 runs in another semi-final of the day.
Garima Yadav and Sandhya Chhetri bowled well to guide Uttar Pradesh outplay Chandigarh by 10 wickets and kept their hopes alive for a berth in the knockout of the Women's Under-23 T20 Trophy, at the Gurugram Cricket Ground in Sultanpur (Haryana) on Saturday.
Garima took 2/10, whereas Sandhya bagged 2/12 as Uttar Pradesh restricted Chandigarh to 71/5 while fielding first after winning the toss. Aaradhana B Bisht (32) struck highest for Chandigarh. In reply, skipper-opener Varnika (36, 37b, 4x4) and Samdapa Dixit (27, 37b, 3x4) took the side home in 12.1 overs without being seperated....
