Dehradun, Sept. 11 -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Uttarakhand on Thursday for an aerial survey of disaster-affected regions of the state and a subsequent review meeting with top officials here, according to senior state government functionaries aware of the matter. On Wednesday, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inspected arrangements at Jolly Grant Airport ahead of the Prime Minister's arrival. He directed officials to ensure preparations were completed on time. "The Prime Minister has a special attachment to Uttarakhand, which is why the state has consistently received his guidance and support in difficult times. His presence will give further impetus to disaster relief and rehabilitation work," Dhami said. The visit comes even as an inter-ministerial central team, which has been touring disaster-hit districts, met the chief minister in Dehradun on Wednesday. The delegation had earlier visited Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Nainital to assess the impact of landslides, floods, and cloudbursts triggered by this year's intense monsoon rains. During the meeting, Dhami stressed that Uttarakhand remains among the most vulnerable states to natural disasters. "Every monsoon, the state grapples with landslides, flash floods, and waterlogging due to excessive rainfall. This year, excessive rains have caused extensive loss of life and property. Cloudburst and landslide incidents leave land permanently damaged, making it unsuitable for farming or construction. A national-level effort is needed to strengthen forecasting systems and reduce such risks," the CM said. He also underlined the need for an effective long-term action plan to mitigate the impact of recurrent disasters. Officials said the central team commended the state government's ongoing relief work, citing positive feedback from affected residents. They noted that food, shelter, medical facilities, and other basic amenities in relief camps were well arranged. The team also appreciated the state's decision to provide an immediate relief payment of Rs.5 lakh to families who lost members or whose houses were completely destroyed. This assistance has provided timely support to affected households, the members said in the meeting Another initiative praised by the team was the creation of a database of all pregnant women in disaster-hit areas, with district administrations maintaining constant contact to ensure maternal health and safe deliveries. "Such steps should be replicated in other states, team members said. However, the delegation also flagged concerns about the long-term risks posed by heavy silt deposits in rivers due to landslides and floods. They warned that rising water levels could increase the likelihood of future flooding and damage in already fragile zones. With the Prime Minister scheduled to conduct an aerial survey on Thursday, officials said his visit is expected to provide momentum to relief and rehabilitation operations, while also ensuring central support for long-term disaster management measures. Dhami said the central and state governments are working in close coordination to provide relief to affected families and restore damaged infrastructure. "This disaster has once again underlined Uttarakhand's sensitivity to extreme weather. Our government, under the guidance of the Prime Minister, is committed to ensuring swift relief and long-term preparedness," he added. The inter-ministerial central team (IMCT) led by Union joint secretary Dr R Prasanna had arrived in Uttarakhand on Monday. The Uttarakhand government earlier this month, in a memorandum to the Union home ministry, sought a special economic package of Rs.5,702.15 crore from the centre to compensate for the losses caused by this year's monsoon and to strengthen vulnerable infrastructure against future natural disasters....
