Modi inspects Ahmedabad crash site, meets ex-CM Rupani's family
New Delhi, June 14 -- A day after the tragic crash of an Air India flight claimed the lives of over 240 people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday visited the crash site in Ahmedabad and took stock of the situation before meeting the injured and relatives of former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani who was killed in the incident.
Officials said that Modi arrived at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on Friday morning and drove straight to the crash site in Meghaninagar. He spent around 20 minutes inspecting the site, where the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI-171) crashed into the BJ Medical College complex seconds after taking off on Thursday afternoon.
"We are all devastated by the air tragedy in Ahmedabad. The loss of so many lives in such a sudden and heartbreaking manner is beyond words. Condolences to all the bereaved families. We understand their pain and also know that the void left behind will be felt for years to come. Om Shanti," Modi said in a post on X.
During the visit, Modi was joined by Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu, Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra and deputy chief minister Harsh Sanghavi among others. "Visited the crash site in Ahmedabad today. The scene of devastation is saddening. Met officials and teams working tirelessly in the aftermath," he said in another post on X.
The Prime Minister also visited those injured in the tragic incident, including the lone survivor in the accident -- Viswas Kumar Ramesh, who received "impact injuries" on his chest, eyes and feet and is being treated at a hospital.
"Met those injured in the aftermath of the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, including the lone survivor and assured them that we are with them and their families in this tough time," the PM said in a separate post.
Modi also met with the family of former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, who was among the 242 people onboard the ill-fated AI-171. "It is unimaginable that Vijaybhai is not in our midst. I've known him for decades. We worked together, shoulder to shoulder, including during some of the most challenging times," he said in a series of posts on X after meeting Rupani's relatives
Describing Rupani as a humble and hardworking figure, Modi said that the former CM was "firmly committed" to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) ideology.
"Rising up the ranks, he held various responsibilities in the Organisation and went on to serve diligently as Gujarat's Chief Minister," Modi said. "In every role assigned, he distinguished himself, be it in the Rajkot Municipal Corporation, as Rajya Sabha MP, as Gujarat BJP President and as Cabinet Minister in the state government."
Later in the day, PM Modi chaired a review meeting with top officials at the Ahmedabad airport. During the meeting, Modi was briefed about the accident by the officials. The meeting was attended by CM Patel, deputy CM Sanghavi, and Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu, among others.
Earlier in the day, Union home minister Amit Shah visited the hospital and met those injured in the incident and assured them of every possible support. The development comes a day after Shah visited the crash site and took stock of the situation.
