Varanasi, May 20 -- A wanted miscreant was arrested following a brief encounter with police in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district early on Monday morning. The accused, identified as 21-year-old Raju Yadav, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange. A country-made pistol, along with one live and one empty cartridge, and a motorcycle were recovered from his possession. According to police sources, specific intelligence was received regarding the movement of two suspicious individuals travelling from Baksha Highway towards Churavanpur. A police team reached the location and positioned themselves near a canal culvert, approximately 100 metres before the road to Churavanpur, at around 1 am. Shortly thereafter, police spotted a motorcycle approaching at high speed. On seeing the police presence, the riders attempted to escape by making a sharp turn, but lost control and fell off the vehicle. In the ensuing chaos, one of the suspects reportedly opened fire at the police. In retaliation and self-defence, station in-charge Divya Prakash Singh Teji Bazar fired a single round aimed below the waist, hitting the accused in the left leg below the knee. Taking advantage of the darkness, the second suspect fled the scene, police said. The injured accused was immediately taken to a nearby government hospital for initial treatment and was later referred to the district hospital, where he remains under medical care. He informed the police that his accomplice, who escaped, goes by the name Kaju. The motorcycle used in the attempted escape, bearing registration number UP62CJ8572, was also seized. Police confirmed that Raju Yadav was wanted in connection with a criminal case registered at Buxa Police Station. Circle officer Parmanand Kushwaha confirmed that a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for opening fire on police personnel.
