Mirzapur folk singer, 5 others held for 'indecent song' on Goddess Durga
VARANASI, Sept. 25 -- Six individuals, including Biraha folk singer Saroj Sargam, were arrested for allegedly uploading a song containing unparliamentary words about Goddess Durga, police said on Wednesday. The song, shared on Sargam's YouTube channel, sparked outrage on social media as it contained 'indecent words', police added.
Those arrested include Saroj Sargam alias Saroj Kol, 35, and her husband Rammilan Bind, 40, the alleged producer and director of the video. Both are residents of Jhunsi, Prayagraj. Others arrested are chorus singers Sitaram Kol, 38, and Suresh Kol, 30, from Mirzapur, dholak player Prem Saroj alias Prachand, 35, and harmonium player Rakesh Kumar Yadav, 34, from Prayagraj.
According to the senior superintendent of police (SSP), two mobile phones-one from Sargam and one from Bind-were seized, containing key digital evidence. Objectionable printed material was also recovered. All six were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.
Police said the matter came to light after the video went viral, hurting the religious sentiments of Hindus during the Sharadiya Navratri. An investigation revealed that the video was produced by Bind, and that a total of nine individuals were involved in the creation and circulation of the content. Two separate FIRs have been registered at police stations in Mirzapur. Charges have been filed under Sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 196 (promoting enmity between groups) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 67 of the IT Act.
