Mirzapur dam gates opened, alert in flood prone villages
VARANASI, Aug. 24 -- The gates of the Ahraura reservoir in Mirzapur district were opened after the dam water rose to the maximum on Saturday. To control the situation, dam officials opened all 22 gates to release water that has led to the threat of flood in several low-lying areas.
Junior engineer Omprakash Rao said that water level of Ahraura Dam was recorded at 355 feet on Saturday morning. Additionally, water level was rising in the dam at the rate of 1 feet per hour due to continuous rain in adjoining areas.
The JE said that due to the rise, 11 gates were opened at 9.30am. But due to flow of water from hilly areas to the dam, the water was filling up the already overflowing dam fast. To control the situation, all 22 gates of the dam were opened at 10.30am.
