Min protests FIRs against supporters, demands SHO's removal in sit-in
Kanpur, July 25 -- In a rare show of protest against her own government's police machinery, minister of state (independent charge) for women welfare, Pratibha Shukla, accompanied by hundreds of supporters, staged a sit-in (dharna) outside Akbarpur police station on Thursday afternoon. The minister accused the station house officer (SHO) of Akbarpur of lodging false FIRs against her party workers without proper investigation and demanded his immediate removal.Refusing to vacate the site, Shukla said, "This is Yogi Adityanath's government, not the Samajwadi Party's, where false cases could be entertained. I want to know under whose pressure these FIRs have been filed and who is influencing the SHO. This kind of administrative high-handedness will not be tolerated."The protest follows FIRs against BJP workers Shiva Pandey, Abrar, Mohammad Yusuf, Aslam, and Yasir. The minister claimed these were retaliatory and politically motivated. The background of the dispute involves a road construction project in Badlapur, funded by the minister's MLA development fund. Local municipal councillor Shamsad Khan allegedly disrupted the work and misbehaved at the site. A contractor filed a complaint against Khan for obstruction and extortion, but the police also lodged a counter-case against the minister's supporters - which she called "completely false and fabricated."Shukla alleged that police officials told her they were acting under political pressure. Despite efforts by circle officer Priya Singh and other senior officers to defuse the situation, the minister remained firm.By evening, SP Kanpur Dehat Arvind Mishra arrived, but Shukla stayed put. Speaking to media, she said, "Until the SHO is removed, I shall remain on dharna."
She stayed seated at the entrance of the police station, surrounded by supporters, and contacted the DGP to convey her concerns. The protest continued at the time of filing this report.Meanwhile, SP president Akhilesh Yadav reacted on social media platform X: "The ruling party's own minister is sitting on dharna against her police force - what more evidence does the Chief Minister need? When BJP goes, proper policing will return."...
