Kanpur, March 24 -- A 28-year-old man died on Monday after striking himself on the head with an axe at Gandhinagar in Bakewer town of Etawah district. He had been showing signs of mental illness in the days leading up to the incident. The man was reportedly muttering that "the goddess is demanding a sacrifice" before he turned the axe on himself. Family members rushed him to the district hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Relatives said the victim had been mentally disturbed for some time. He had married around 18 months ago, but his wife had been staying at her parents' home for the past month owing to domestic tensions.
