PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 7 -- A 33-year-old man died by suicide after jumping from the 10th floor of a 14-storey apartment building in Rajrooppur under Dhumanganj police station area on Wednesday morning. The deceased, identified as a resident of the nearby Barsana sector, had a long history of mental illness, police said. According to family members, the man had been struggling with schizophrenia for around 10 years and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Prayagraj. He had previously attempted to take his life by jumping from the third floor of his apartment building in 2019 but survived, police added. Local residents reported seeing a blood-soaked body outside Vasudha Apartments at approximately 9.15 am. Upon receiving the report, a team from the Dhumanganj police station, led by DCP (City) Abhishek Bharti, rushed to the scene. The victim remained unidentified for nearly an hour until his family arrived and confirmed his identity. "The mentally unwell man committed suicide by jumping from the building. No allegations have been made by the family. The youth's actions were also captured on CCTV footage," said Bharti. Police said that the man left his home on Wednesday morning to purchase some items. CCTV footage shows him entering Vasudha Apartments at 9.09 am and then jumping from the 10th floor at 9.17 am. His elder brother, an advocate, expressed sorrow over the tragedy and confirmed that the family had been supporting him through his prolonged battle with mental illness.
