GORAKHPUR, July 16 -- Siddharthnagar district authorities on Tuesday demolished over a century- old Fagu Shah mazar (mausoleum). The action was taken after a revenue department probe revealed that over 1,000 square feet of land of the mazar had been encroached. A weekly fair traditionally held at the site was to be held after two days. "The site was located on land officially reserved for cattle grazing. As no official land ownership documents were available with the fair organisers, the structure was removed as part of the anti-encroachment drive," said Siddharthnagar ADM Gaurav Srivastava. Later, Section 144 was imposed in the area to maintain peace. ASP Prashant Kumar said the structure was razed peacefully with no resistance from the public. However, police personnel remained deployed in the area to monitor the situation and prevent any unrest, he added.
