Mavi's show guides KR notch up big win
LUCKNOW, Aug. 19 -- Pacer Shivam Mavi, who has been out of action for a while now owing to injuries, on Monday came with a stunning all-round performance to help former champions Kashi Rudras (KR) notch up a facile 50-run win over Gaur Gorakhpur Lions (GGL) in the second match of the UPTwenty League, at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cricket Stadium here.
Riding on Mavi's 21-ball 54 and captain Karan Sharma's 19-ball 39, Kashi posted 176 batting first. Later, Mavi along with fellow pacer Atal Bihari Rai bowled superbly to restrict Gaur Gorakhpur Lions on 126 in 19.1 overs.
Playing at a stunning strike rate of 257, Mavi played an explosive knock of 54 runs off 21 deliveries. He scored 36 out of 54 runs with the help of sixes. The batter, who last played his IPL match in 2022, came in to bat with Kashi reeling at 88/6 in the 14th over.
After Aranav Baliyan departed three deliveries later, the former joined hands with Shiva Singh to add 87 runs for the eighth wicket to take Kashi to a respectable score. Mavi, who was initially inducted in the Lucknow Super Giants in the 2025 IPL season before being ruled out, along with Shiva smacked sixes against Shivam Sharma in the 18th over of the innings. They sent five out of six deliveries across the boundary line.
Shiva hit three successive sixes off the first three balls and took a single on the fourth. Mavi hit two more sixes on the last two deliveries to collectively score 31 runs off the over. Shiva remained unbeaten on a 17-ball 34 while Mavi was dismissed on the last ball of the innings by Vasu Vats.
Mavi was last seen in action in January, when he represented Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. He picked 13 wickets in five matches at an impressive economy of 3.4. He has been out of action in the IPL for the last two years. He was ruled out due to injury from IPL 2024 and went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Later, Gaur Gorakhpur Lions never got the going easy as they lost six wickets for 88 in the 16th over before being bundled out for 126. Prince Yadav struck highest 49 (29b, 4x4 4x6), whereas skipper Akshdeep Nath made 32-ball 34 with the help of three boundaries and a six....
