Maulana Tauqeer Raza, 14 others granted bail; pending FIRs prevents release
Bareilly, Dec. 3 -- The Additional Sessions Judge of Court No. 4, Amrita Shukla, on Monday approved the bail applications of 15 individuals accused in connection with the September 26 violence in Bareilly. The court ordered their release on personal bonds, but the accused-including Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza-will remain behind bars for now, as several other cases against them are still pending.
A total of 10 FIRs were registered across five police stations following the unrest. Bail in the remaining cases has yet to be granted, which currently bars the accused from release from jail. According to senior prosecution officer Lavlesh Singh, Maulana Raza and his co-accused filed their bail petitions through their legal teams. The court heard extensive arguments from both the defence and prosecution before approving bail. Maulana Raza has now secured bail in two cases-one each lodged at Kotwali and Prem Nagar police stations. He had earlier obtained bail in another related case as well.
Raza has been lodged in Fatehgarh Central Jail since September 27, a day after violence erupted over a dispute involving "I Love Muhammad" posters.
Ten FIRs were filed across the city-five of them at Kotwali police station alone. Raza was named in all ten cases: initially in seven, and later in three more after further investigation.
Police officers said that following Friday prayers, Raza's supporters raised provocative slogans and hurled petrol bombs and stones at police when permission for a protest was denied. The administration had imposed prohibitory orders under BNSS Section 163 due to the Navratri and Urs festivals. Authorities allege that Raza released a video challenging the restrictions and warning of "dire consequences" if the protest was stopped. Violence soon spread from Khalil Tiraha to Naumahalla Mosque, Kotwali, SP City Office, Novelty Chauraha, Azamnagar, and Shyamganj. Police teams have been making frequent visits to Fatehgarh Jail to record Raza's statements in multiple cases. On Saturday, investigators questioned him regarding the Biharipur outpost attack, while on Sunday, SSI Santosh Singh and Nitin Rana recorded his statement in cases related to the Kumar Talkies riot and the Chauraha outpost violence. Raza faces grave charges including incitement to riot, criminal conspiracy, threats through viral videos, and provocation with intent to cause violence. He is also named in cases linked to the 2019 anti-CAA/NRC protests.Police have secured B-warrants against him in all pending matters. His counsel, advocate Sunil Saxena, said securing bail across all cases could take at least six months. If the National Security Act (NSA) is invoked, Raza's detention could be extended by up to a year. Six out of the ten cases involving Raza are being investigated by the Kotwali police. His close aides-IMC office bearers Nafees Khan alias Dr Nafees, former district president Nadeem, Farhat, Muneer Idrishi, Anees Saklaini, and Sajid-are among the 105 people currently imprisoned in connection with the riots. Following Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's directive for strict action, the Bareilly administration has sealed or demolished properties worth nearly Rs.250 crore linked to the accused. These include Dr Nafees's Rs.5 crore banquet hall and an illegal electric vehicle....
