Massive outages hit several Lko localities
Lucknow, June 3 -- As the city steps into June, residents continue to grapple with high humidity levels, adding to the discomfort due to the power crisis which gripped Lucknow on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, plunging several localities into darkness and disrupting the water supply.
Technical faults at major substations, including Daud Nagar, Kabir Nagar, Indira Nagar, Shivajipuram, Sarai Mali Khan, Chaupatian, Chander Nagar, Utrethia, Rehman Khera, affected many neighborhoods. According to LESA insiders, eight transformers were damaged due to overloading in these areas.
On June 1, the humidity was recorded at 73%, only slightly lower than the previous day. On May 31, humidity levels had climbed to 76%, while May 30 also saw a reading of 73%, according to data from the Meteorological Department.
Residents of Sector 11 in Indira Nagar endured a sleepless night due to a prolonged power outage that lasted from 10.30pm until 4am. According to locals, the disruption was caused by fire in the ABC cable located behind the Government Girls School in the area.
Residents say the ABC cable had been newly installed just last year, raising serious concerns about whether the incident was due to overloading or poor cable quality. The unexpected breakdown left the neighborhood in darkness for nearly six hours, sparking frustration among residents.
A similar situation was reported in Shivaji Puram, Sector 14, where power supply was cut off from midnight until 3.20am. The power department attributed this disruption to a blown DO (Drop Out) fuse in the local transformer. However, residents questioned why it took more than three hours to simply replace the fuse-especially since no major fault was found after extensive searching.
Late Sunday night, a fire broke out in the ABC line at Sarai Mali Khan under the Chaupatiya substation. Simultaneously, the Chinhat transmission substation became overloaded due to high demand, prompting forced power cuts (roster cuts) in connected areas, including the Shivpuri substation.
The Daud Nagar substation in the Sitapur Road division broke down around 8pm, resulting in outages in Ganesh Vihar, Annapurna Nagar, and Ashok Nagar. The power outage also affected water supply, sparking frustration among residents. Calls to the substation led to restoration efforts by technicians, who eventually repaired the fault.
In Faizullaganj's Aziz Nagar, power remained disrupted during the night, here damage in transformer was reported. Meanwhile, a breakdown in the 33 kV line at Kabir Nagar substation left areas like Pandit Kheda, Hans Kheda, Gokul State, Kanshiram Colony, Sun City, Munnu Kheda, Chunnu Kheda, Shubham City, Duda Colony, Gayatri Puram, Asrey Colony, Gold City, and Krishna Vihar Colony without power. Residents complained that calls to the substation went unanswered.
In Alambagh's Chandar Nagar area, a fire in the ABC line around midnight in Pawanpuri caused a three-hour power cut. Additional outages were reported due to faults at the Rahmankheda feeder (Gehru substation) and ABC line fire at Adarsh Nagar under the Utrethia substation. These localities remained without power until early morning hours.
According to a higher official of LESA due to high humidity the power demand has reached over 1750 MW and many transformers are getting overloaded, so unofficial rostering is going on in many areas.
Chief engineer LESA Ravi Agarwal said, "The engineers are directed to remain alert during the nights at all the substations."...
