Massive fire at Obra Thermal Power Plant
Varanasi, May 9 -- A fire broke out in two interconnecting transformers at the switchyard of the Obra Thermal Power generation unit in Sonbhadra district on Thursday morning, triggering widespread disruption in power supply across parts of Uttar Pradesh.
According to police officials, the blaze erupted around 6:30 am and quickly engulfed the area, with thick smoke and fierce flames visible from a considerable distance. Firefighting efforts continued for over three hours, and the flames were finally brought under control by 10:00 am.
Multiple firefighting units were deployed to tackle the fire, including those from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Chopan, Hindalco, and the district headquarters. Entry within a 100-metre radius of the site was strictly prohibited as a precautionary measure.
Senior district officials, including district magistrate BN Singh and superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Meena, rushed to the scene to assess the situation. In an emergency measure to prevent the fire from spreading, the 10th and 11th generating units each with a capacity of 200 MW were shut down.
Chief general manager RK Agarwal confirmed that the fire was caused by a technical fault in an interconnecting transformer at the B thermal power station. "Work is being carried out on a war footing, and both units are expected to be restarted by late evening," Agarwal said....
