PRAYAGRAJ, May 30 -- Ram Snehi and Kallu were a relieved lot after their old age pension was restored after over two-and-a-half years as the duo was allegedly marked dead in the records of Prayagraj district social welfare department following which they moved the Allahabad high court to prove that they were alive. After the court order, the social welfare department not only restored their pension but also paid arrears. The department paid Ram Snehi Rs 35,000 in arrears earlier while Kallu was paid Rs 30,000 on Wednesday (May 28). Confirming that the pension of the duo had been restored, district social welfare officer Pragya Pandey said a total of Rs 65,000 was paid to them as arrears. As per an order of the district social welfare department dated May 9, 2025, Ram Snehi's Rs 1,000 monthly pension, which was restored in April this year, remained discontinued for 33 months between July 2022 and March 2025 after a verification report of 2022 marked him dead in official records. Similarly, as per another order of the said department dated May 20, 2025, Kallu was marked dead in a 2022 annual verification report. His pension was stopped on September 13, 2022 and remained discontinued for 30 months from October 2022 to March 2025. His pension was also restored in April this year. Earlier, after the department staff checked official documents, it was found that the two had been mistakenly marked as dead in it during the annual screening of the beneficiaries. Shocked to see themselves marked dead in official records, both submitted their proof of being alive in the department but failed to get their pension resorted.
