Many birds, mostly pigeons, found dead in Hamirpur
Kanpur, Jan. 6 -- A large number of native and migratory birds were found dead in fields at Nadna village in Hamirpur district's Rath tehsil on Monday. Most of the birds are pigeons.
Locals suspected poisoning and alleged that the birds may have been killed by hunters. Forest officials, however, dismissed this claim, saying hunters do not use poison as it makes the meat unfit for consumption. Officials said the deaths may be linked to cold weather, though the exact cause will be determined only after post-mortem examinations. District forest officer Anil Srivastava said teams were sent to the site and post-mortem examinations would be conducted. "Poison is not used for hunting birds. The deaths may have occurred due to cold conditions. The cause will be clear after the post-mortem," he said.
Videos and photographs of the dead birds have surfaced on social media. Some migratory species are also visible in the images circulating online.
The carcasses of the birds were found at multiple locations across farmland, with villagers reporting that feathers and remains were also seen in nearby bushes. After receiving information, the forest department dispatched a team to the village to assess the situation.
