man who ran over fauja singh held in punjab
Jalandhar, July 17 -- A 26-year-old Canada-based man has been arrested in connection with the July 14 hit-and-run case that claimed the life of veteran marathon runner Fauja Singh, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, allegedly drove the SUV that hit the 114-year-old Singh while he was crossing a road in Beas village in Jalandhar district of Punjab, police said. Dhillon was arrested on Tuesday night after police identified the vehicle, a white Toyota Fortuner, using CCTV footage, officials said, adding that the vehicle has been impounded.
"Dhillon was arrested from his house in Kartarpur on Tuesday night," Jalandhar rural senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harvinder Singh Virk said on Wednesday.
Dhillon, who originally belongs to the Dasupur village in Jalandhar's Kartarpur sub division, confessed to driving the vehicle during the accident, the SSP said. He has been booked under sections 105 (culpable homicide), 281 (rash driving), and 125-A (endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police said....
