PRAYAGRAJ, Oct. 7 -- Police have arrested a man who created a fake website and engaged in online fraud during the Mahakumbh Mela held earlier this year in Prayagraj. Shivanshu Bhardwaj was arrested in Meerut on Monday. Bhardwaj is accused of defrauding devotees of Rs 18.90 lakh by creating a fake website and taking cottage, tent, and hotel bookings. DCP Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, who is also the cyber crime nodal officer, stated that a case was registered for online fraud during the Mahakumbh Mela. Investigation of the fake website traced the accused's location to Meerut. During interrogation, the accused revealed that he had created a fake website to book cottages, tents, and hotels for pilgrims at the Mahakumbh Mela. He defrauded pilgrims of Rs 18.90 lakh by promising them excellent accommodation, VIP bathing, and darshan. A mobile phone, four SIM cards, five ATM cards, and Rs 515 were recovered from him. Police from Shivkuti station arrested a criminal in an encounter near Mehdauri Colony, late on Sunday night. Police recovered a stolen gold chain, an illegal firearm, and a cartridge from his possession. The accused, who was shot in the leg, was admitted to the hospital. However, another criminal on the bike escaped during the encounter. DCP (City) Manish Kumar Shandilya said that Shivkuti police were carrying out routine checks of vehicles near Mehdauri, late on Sunday night. Meanwhile, two suspicious youths were seen approaching on a bike from the Ganga River Front. When the police signalled them to stop, the bike riders turned back and tried to flee. When the police team chased them, the youth on the bike opened fire. In retaliatory fire, one of the two on the bike, Abbu Huzaifa, resident of Tekari Nawabganj, was shot in the leg and fell to the ground. His companion, Gufran Ahmed, a resident of Chafri Nawabganj, fled with the bike. During interrogation, Huzaifa revealed that a few days ago, he had snatched a gold chain from a woman near Kalash Square.
