Man shot dead in front of kin, guests; one held
Meerut, Sept. 27 -- A man was shot dead in his house in front of his family members and guests, in Shahajahanpur's Tilhar area late on Thursday night, police said.
The assault was carried out by three men, who were reportedly upset over not being invited to a family function, they added.
According to police, Avneesh, 24, was hosting a naming ritual for his nephew at his home. The house was filled with guests when around 11 pm, accused Dharmendra and Dhirendra Verma, the sons of a village head, stormed into the house. The family alleged that the two misbehaved with women at the function. When confronted, they hurled abuses and left.
About half an hour later, Dharmendra and Dhirendra returned with their father, Sukhdev. According to witnesses, Sukhdev and Dhirendra were armed with country-made pistols, while Dharmendra was carrying a knife. When Avneesh opposed, Dharmendra and Dhirendra pinned him down while Sukhdev fired a bullet into his chest, killing him in front of the guests.
Locals caught hold of Sukhdev as he tried to escape, beating him before handing him over to police. His two sons, however, managed to flee after firing shots in the air, superintendent of police Rajesh Dwivedi said....
