LUCKNOW, Sept. 11 -- A 48-year-old man allegedly attempted to set himself on fire on Vikramaditya Marg near the Samajwadi Party office on Wednesday afternoon. Police said the incident occurred around 3:35 pm. Police personnel from Gautampalli station intervened to extinguish the flames. The man was taken to Civil Hospital, where officials described his condition as critical but stable. Preliminary investigations indicate he had travelled from Aligarh and was allegedly under financial stress and had a dispute with a group of men in his locality, who he claimed had taken several lakh rupees from him and were allegedly harassing him over repayment. The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh, along with the forest department, arrested a man in Hazratganj on Tuesday for allegedly smuggling a threatened tortoise species listed under Schedule-I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The accused, Vishal Mehra, son of Munesh Kumar Mehra and a resident of Malihabad, was arrested near the Hazratganj Civil Office around 5:30 pm on Tuesday. Officials recovered one Indian Star Tortoise (Geochelone elegans), a mobile phone, and a scooter from him. "We received a tip-off that a man was trying to sell a tortoise in Hazratganj.
