LUCKNOW, Sept. 14 -- In another case of cyber fraud, a man lost Rs.1 lakh after he was targeted by fraudsters posing as Delhi Police and telecom officials and kept under "digital arrest" for nearly four hours, Lucknow police said. Vinay Kumar Gupta, who lives in Krishnapalli under Krishna Nagar police station limits, received a WhatsApp call on August 25, as per the complaint. The caller, identifying himself as one Suresh Kumar from the telecom department, claimed that Vinay's SIM card would be blocked within two hours as his ID had been used to purchase a SIM linked to criminal activities in Delhi. A few minutes later, Vinay received a video call from another man who introduced himself as one Sunil Kumar from Delhi Police. "The accused kept him under digital arrest for four hours and warned him against informing anyone. Under pressure, Vinay transferred Rs.1 lakh in two tranches to the account given by the caller," said SHO P.K. Singh of Krishna Nagar police station. When the promised refund never arrived, Vinay informed his brother Vijay Kumar, who is a BSF inspector.
