Varanasi, May 2 -- A 68-year-old man died after being beaten by his 36-year-old son in Sarain village, located in the Ahraula police station area of Azamgarh district. The argument broke out late on Wednesday night, arising from a disagreement over who should bear the expenses of the 13th-day ritual, a traditional observance in which family members offer food to relatives, neighbours, and other community members following the death of a loved one. According to police reports, Sanjay Rajbhar, the younger son of the deceased, stated that his mother, Maya Devi, had passed away eight days earlier. Ramlaut Rajbhar, 68, and his elder son, Vijay Rajbhar, 36, got into a heated argument over the responsibility of organising the ritual. According to a local resident, the family's financial condition was poor, and the son who assaulted his father is reportedly a habitual drinker. Ramlaut had expressed his wish to arrange a modest 13th-day ritual for about 40 people, including some relatives and villagers. Even a simple arrangement would have cost over Rs 10,000, which became a point of disagreement. The dispute escalated to such an extent that Vijay allegedly began beating his father with a stick, causing serious injuries. Before the victim could be taken to hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Sanjay later informed the police about the incident, prompting an immediate response from authorities. Upon reaching the scene, police took the accused son into custody and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. A case under section 105 (culpable homicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against Vijay Rajbhar, based on a complaint filed by the younger son. Superintendent of Police (Rural), Chirag Jain, confirmed the incident, stating that legal action will follow upon completion of the post-mortem and further investigation....
