Man kills daughter for rejecting arranged marriage
MEERUT, Sept. 8 -- A 48-year-old man allegedly strangled his 20-year-old daughter to death in Kidwai Nagar, under the Khalapar Police Station jurisdiction of Muzaffarnagar district, on Saturday. The murder was reportedly triggered by the daughter, Arzu's refusal to agree to an arranged marriage and her secret contact with another man.
Following the incident, the accused, Gayyur surrendered to the police, confessing, "I have killed my daughter because she was determined to dishonour me. She refused to listen to me."
According to police, Arzu's marriage had been fixed with a man from Deoband, Saharanpur, and the wedding was scheduled to take place around Diwali. However, she opposed the match and had been in frequent contact with another man, often speaking to him for hours on the phone. Despite her father's repeated efforts to persuade her, Arzu remained unwilling to go through with the arranged marriage.
On Saturday, around 2:30 pm, he sent his disabled wife, Hajra, and younger daughter to the roof on the pretext of some work. He asked his 13-year-old son, Rihan, to go out and buy flour, while directing his 9-year-old son, Ayan, to look after the family's grocery shop situated below their home. Once the house was cleared, Gayyur entered Arzu's room, where she was asleep, and strangled her to death.
After committing the murder, Gayyur called his wife to tell her what he had done before leaving the house. Around 8 pm, he surrendered at Khalapar Police Station, where he was taken into custody.
SP City Saty Narayan Prajapat confirmed that Gayyur's motive was driven by anger and frustration over Arzu's refusal to marry the chosen groom and her continuous phone conversations with another man. Police have launched an investigation, with Gayyur under interrogation. Arzu's body has been sent for post-mortem to confirm the cause of death....
