Man kills brother for Rs 95 lakh insurance payouts
Meerut, May 10 -- In another case of a murder carried out to commit an insurance fraud in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, police have arrested two men for the brutal killing of one Sanjay Gupta last June, police said. One of the two men was Sanjay's younger brother, Naveen Gupta, who wanted to claim Rs 95 lakh payouts from insurance schemes in the former's name, they added.
Additional superintendent of police (ASP) Anukriti Sharma told reporters: "On June 20 last year, Naveen, 42, allegedly pushed Sanjay, 50, off a moving e-rickshaw and bashed the latter's head several times killing him on the spot. He also threatened the rickshaw driver after which the later fled. Naveen too fled but returned later to take Sanjay's body to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead."
"Initially, Naveen claimed that Sanjay died of chest pain, but when he learned that such deaths were ineligible for insurance payouts, he changed his statement and informed police that a road accident was the cause of his brother's death," she added. The police, finding no evidence to contradict the claim, closed the case. In April this year, Naveen received Rs.20 lakh from an insurance company since Sanjay was divorced and had no children. To carry out the murder, Naveen allegedly colluded with his friends Akhilesh Gupta and Raju. While Akhilesh had also been arrested, Raju remained at large, the ASP said.
The ASP said Sanjay had already made Naveen the nominee of four of his insurance policies the payouts of which totalled Rs.95 lakh.
"The case unraveled when an insurance agent's tip-off prompted police to investigate fraudulent claims in Sambhal. Documents provided by the agent pointed to irregularities in Sanjay's policies, leading to Naveen and Akhilesh's arrest on Friday. The accused have been charged with murder and fraud, and police are actively searching for Raju," the SP said.
Last week, police in the district had said that a man with a physical disability was allegedly murdered last year by scamsters who wanted to claim his insurance money.
The murder case was worked out when the police were investigating an interstate insurance scam that was unearthed in Sambhal in January this year and, in connection with which, 34 people had been jailed so far, they added.
Four people were arrested in connection with the murder of Dariyab, which was portrayed as to have been caused by an accident, on July 31, 2024, ASP said....
