Bahraich, Nov. 27 -- An elderly man was seriously injured after a jackal attacked him early on Wednesday morning, in Dhoomanpur village, under the Ramgaon police station area of Bahraich. Quick intervention by villagers saved his life, as they rushed to the spot hearing his cries and killed the animal on the spot. According to officials, 70-year-old Sunder, a resident of Baukaha village, under the Ramgaon police station area, had visited his in-laws in Dhoomanpur on Tuesday. After spending the day meeting acquaintances, he had dinner and slept on a cot in the open veranda of the house. At dawn, a jackal suddenly pounced on him while he was asleep. Sunder shouted for help and attempted to fend off the animal. Hearing his screams, nearby villagers rushed to the scene armed with sticks. They beat the jackal to death and rescued the injured man. Sunder was rushed to Bahraich Medical College where doctors said he had sustained multiple wounds from the jackal's claws and teeth but that his condition is stable and he is undergoing treatment. Divisional forest officer (DFO) Ram Singh Yadav confirmed the incident, stating that the wild animal was indeed a jackal.
