Rudrapur, June 26 -- A court in Champawat district has sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years' imprisonment for abetting his wife's suicide. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs.75,000 on the convict, with additional jail time in case of non-payment. According to district government counsel Vidyadhar Joshi, the accused was initially booked under charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. While the court acquitted him of dowry related charges due to lack of conclusive evidence, it found him guilty of inciting his wife to take her own life. On Tuesday, Sessions Judge Anuj Kumar Sangal announced the verdict, holding the accused guilty under relevant sections of the IPC for abetment to suicide. Joshi said the case dates back to October 11, 2022, when the woman's father filed a complaint alleging that his 23-year-old daughter, who had married the accused just over a year earlier, was being mentally and emotionally harassed for dowry. He stated that on October 10, 2024, she had made a distress call, pleading with her parents to bring her home. However, the very next day, the family received a call from the accused informing them that the woman had consumed a poisonous substance. Her father and other relatives rushed to her house and took her to the nearest community health centre, where doctors declared her dead on arrival....
