Man falls into dry well; rescued using cooking pot, rope
VARANASI, Nov. 2 -- The Varanasi police had rescued a labourer who had accidentally fallen into a dry well in Mawaiya under the Sarnath police station area on Friday, using an improvised method involving a large cooking pot (bhagona or patila) and a 30-foot-long rope.
The man, identified as Amarnath, 50, a resident of Satpura in Ballia district, works in Saidpur, Ghazipur. According to police, Amarnath had come to Mawaiya to meet a contractor to collect his pending wages. While walking through the locality, he accidentally lost balance and fell into a dry well.
Ashapur police outpost in-charge, sub-inspector Meenu Singh, said she received information about the incident on Friday evening and immediately reached the spot with her team.
Local residents provided a rope about 30 feet long, while a large vessel was borrowed from a nearby house for the rescue. "We tied the rope to the vessel and lowered it into the well. The man was instructed to climb into it, and then with the help of four to five police personnel, we pulled him out safely," Singh said....
