Man falls into drain in Chowk area, rescued
LUCKNOW, July 20 -- An elderly man reportedly fell into a drain near Badi Kali temple road in Chowk area on Friday night, triggering alarm after a video of the incident surfaced on social media on Saturday.
The area falls under Lucknow Municipal Corporation's (LMC) zone 6 and is currently undergoing underground drain cleaning work for which the civic body had barricaded the area and even reflectors were placed at the site of the incident.
In the viral video, the man is seen falling into the open chamber but later emerging safely with the help of passers-by and residents who used a staircase to pull him out. According to the eyewitnesses, the man lost his balance soon after a four wheeler zoomed past him leading to the incident.
Following the video's circulation, the LMC issued a statement denying any person fell into the drain. The civic body claimed that a scooter rider hit the barricade installed around the open chamber during the night, causing a portion of it to fall.
"No individual was found in the drain, and there was no loss of life. The barricade had been properly tied and was hanging inside the chamber after the impact," said an LMC official.
According to the LMC, its rubbish removal department is currently carrying out cleaning work of the underground drain by opening the lid of the inspection chamber. Officials said barricades around six feet tall had been installed for public safety and that the work was being conducted as per safety protocols.
"Additionally, file approval has been granted to repair the rusted MS sheet and girders on the chamber. An e-tender for the same has already been floated, and the work will be executed as per procedural rules," confirmed municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar.
The LMC has urged commuters to stay cautious while using the route, follow traffic rules and preferably use alternate roads to avoid inconvenience....
