Man fakes own kidnapping after Rs.40L gaming debt, found
LUCKNOW, Jan. 11 -- A 35-year-old man who allegedly staged his own kidnapping after accumulating a debt of nearly Rs.40 lakh from online lenders was found in Bareilly 72 hours later, police here said on Saturday. He reportedly lost the entire sum in online gaming.
According to assistant commissioner of police (ACP) Krishna Nagar Rajneesh Verma, one Sunil Kumar of Para Road lodged a missing complaint on January 6 stating that his brother Rajnish Kumar had gone missing. Acting swiftly, police registered a missing person's report and formed two special teams to trace him.
According to police officials, the teams scanned footage from around 150 CCTV cameras and tracked Rajnish's movement across multiple locations before finally locating him in Bareilly on January 10. He was later handed over to his family, said police.
"During preliminary questioning, Rajnish revealed that he works as an office assistant in the electricity department at Indralok Colony, Vijay Nagar, and had been addicted to several online gaming apps. He allegedly took loans worth around Rs.40 lakh through multiple online lenders," the ACP added.
Police said Rajnish panicked after failing to repay the loans and receiving repeated calls threatening to circulate his nude photos and videos. "Out of fear and mental stress, he falsely informed his family about being kidnapped and left his office, travelling to Delhi and then Bareilly to avoid contact," a police officer said.
After his recovery, police counselled him on the dangers of online gaming addiction and digital loan traps. Officials said timely use of technical surveillance, local intelligence and coordinated fieldwork led to the quick resolution of the case.
