Man duped ofRs 96K by fake customer care executive
Lucknow, June 24 -- A man from Chinhat, Dharam Prakash, lost Rs96,000 in a digital fraud after being duped by a cybercriminal posing as a Paytm customer care executive. The incident occurred on June 17, and an FIR (first information report) was registered on June 22 under Section 66D of the IT Act at Chinhat police station. Prakash noticed unauthorised deductions from his bank account and, while seeking help, searched online for Paytm's customer care number. He called a number he believed was genuine.
The fraudster, posing as a Paytm representative, assured him of a refund and asked for his banking details. After clicking a link and entering his information, Rs 96,000 was debited from his account.
When questioned, the fraudster convinced him the refund process was ongoing and sent another link. Sensing something was wrong, Prakash contacted the Cyber Cell and later lodged a complaint with the police.
Police confirmed that the scam originated from a fake number found online and warned people against sharing banking details or clicking unknown links. Investigations are ongoing....
