Haldwani, June 29 -- A 30-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Nainital district on Friday evening, police officers aware of the matter said on Saturday. Family members of the deceased alleged that he died by suicide after being assaulted by police. However, police have dismissed the allegations. On Saturday, BJP workers led by MLA Banshidhar Bhagat staged a protest outside the police station, demanding registration of an FIR against the "culprit constable." The victim's father, a local BJP leader, alleged that his son was stopped by a police team on Friday evening and a constable abused and slapped him, he alleged. Station house officer (SHO) Vijay Mehta said, "Our investigation into the matter is underway. Prima facie investigation reveals the constable didn't beat anyone."
