KANPUR, July 16 -- A 25-year-old man in Farrukhabad district died by suicide after allegedly being beaten in police custody and forced to pay Rs 40,000 for his release, sparking protests by his family on Tuesday. An FIR has been registered against three persons whose names he scribbled on his white trousers before taking the step, said DIG (Range) Harish Chandra, adding that two of the accused are police constables who have been attached to the police lines. Police said the incident occurred in the Mau Darwaza police station area, where the deceased, Dilip Rajput, had been involved in a domestic dispute with his wife Neeraj, whom he had allegedly beaten. Following the alleged assault two days ago, Neeraj returned to her parental home and lodged a complaint with the local police. Acting on her complaint, personnel from the Hathiapur police post reportedly picked up Dilip from his village, Gutasi, on Monday afternoon.
