Varanasi, Oct. 19 -- A man accused of cheating a resident of Sonbhadra out of Rs.10 lakh was arrested by the Cyber Crime Police of Sonbhadra, officials said on Saturday. The full amount has been returned to the victim's bank account. Superintendent of Police, Sonbhadra, Abhishek Verma said that Gyan Prakash, from Deori village in Myorpur area, was tricked by an unknown person who contacted him through a social media platform. The fraudster promised to help him secure admission to VJTI Engineering College and took Rs.10 lakh in two instalments. After Gyan Prakash filed a complaint, a case was registered under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66(D) of the IT Act. The cyber police team began an investigation and used digital tracking and technical surveillance to identify the accused. The accused, Ravi Mohan Singh Rathora, 39, a resident of Kota and currently living in Pune, was arrested. Police also recovered fake admission forms, bank passbooks, cheque books, and other documents related to college admissions. A middle-aged man posing as an excise inspector was caught at a government liquor shop on the bypass and handed over to police by the shopkeeper and bystanders. According to the liquor salesman, the accused, identified as Manoj Saxena, arrived at the shop on Saturday afternoon claiming to be an excise inspector. He demanded to inspect the license, threatened the salesman, and took an expensive bottle of liquor along with Rs.15,000 in cash. Suspecting foul play, the salesman alerted nearby people. Upon questioning, it was discovered that the man was impersonating an official. A man was duped of Rs.3 lakh after being falsely promised a job abroad. Police have registered a case based on the complaint and initiated legal proceedings. Sunil Kumar Giri, a resident of Deum West village under Sangipur police station in Pratapgarh, alleged that Raghvendra Pratap Singh of Rajapur Belwa Hasan (under Jais police station in Amethi district) took Rs.3 lakh from him, as well as money from Dinesh Kumar Rajak and Sandeep, both residents of his village, under the pretext of sending them abroad for work. However, even after 18 months, no action was taken. When the victims demanded their money back, the accused allegedly threatened them and refused repayment.
