Man accused in cattle slaughter, attack on cops injured in encounter
PRAYAGRAJ, Dec. 8 -- A man wanted in a cattle slaughter case and for allegedly attacking police personnel was injured in an encounter with police near the Bhikhampur canal culvert under the Aaspur Devasara police station area in Pratapgarh district late Saturday night.
Police said they recovered a country-made pistol and a motorcycle from the injured accused, identified as Omkar Nath, a resident of Udaipur village in the Aaspur Devasara area.
After sustaining a bullet injury in his right leg, Omkar Nath was first taken to the community health centre (CHC) in Amargarh and later referred to the medical college hospital for further treatment, police officials added.
According to police records, Omkar Nath was named in a September 4, 2021 case related to the seizure of beef packed in a sack in Kopa village. Later, on September 29, 2021, he was accused of trying to run over a police team with a cattle-laden vehicle near the Setapur Kharkharhava bridge. He had been on the run in both cases for several years, said SHO Vijendra Kumar Singh.
On Saturday night, the SHO and his team were carrying out routine checks at the Bhikhampur canal culvert when they signalled a motorcycle to stop.
The rider allegedly opened fire at the police, prompting them to retaliate. He was shot in the leg and subsequently taken into custody, the SHO said.
Circle officer (Patti) Manoj Singh Raghuvanshi confirmed that the accused had been on the run for a long time and is currently admitted to the medical college hospital following the encounter....
