Man, nephew die after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning septic tank
PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 7 -- A man and his nephew died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning the septic tank of the toilet at their under-construction house in Saidabad Purani Bazar under Handia police station area in Prayagraj on Saturday.
Family members rushed them to the nearby Community Health Centre (CHC) in Saidabad for treatment. However, due to the lack of adequate treatment facilities, the family shifted them to the district hospital, where doctors declared them dead, said police on Saturday.
On receiving information about Handia police took the bodies into custody and sent it for postmortem.
The cause of death is suspected to be suffocation, they added.
Angered by the lack of proper medical facilities at the CHC, the victims' family members, along with other villagers, staged a protest. Handia SDM Rawendra Singh and SHO Nitendra Shukla visited the incident site and assured the bereaved family of all possible assistance.
According to reports, plumbing work was underway at the newly constructed toilet in the house of Dharamraj, a resident of Saidabad Purani Bazar under Handia police station limits. The 15-foot-deep tank was filled with dirt and waste.
On Saturday, Dharmaraj entered the 15-foot tank using a rope but did not return. When he failed to respond, his nephew Vinay (16) also went down but failed to return.
Their neighbor Sunil Chauhan also attempted a rescue but was overwhelmed by the toxic fumes and pulled out. Another neighbor, Shahid, also tried but could not endure the smell. Finally, Dharmaraj's brother Rajbali mustered courage, went down, and brought out both Dharmaraj and Vinay.
The family rushed Dharmaraj, Vinay, and Sunil, all unconscious, to Saidabad CHC. Seeing Dharmaraj and Vinay in critical condition, the doctors referred them to the district hospital, where both were declared dead....
