Meerut, Feb. 19 -- In a late-night crime, police in Swar village of Rampur district arrested a man accused of killing his nephew with a sickle, allegedly because he considered him an obstacle to an illicit relationship. According to police, the incident took place around 11.45 pm Tuesday in Khoudkalan, under the jurisdiction of the Maswasi police outpost. The accused, identified as Naseem alias Bhura-the victim's cousin and uncle respectively-allegedly attacked 28-year-old Mohammad Aqil with a sickle, killing him on the spot. Residents said they were asleep when they suddenly heard screams. When they rushed out and reached Aqil's house, they found him lying in a pool of blood with a sickle embedded in his head. He was alone at home at the time of the attack. A neighbour who heard his cries reportedly saw the accused attempting to flee from the house. Villagers quickly gathered, preventing his escape. Station house officer Sanjeev Kumar arrived at the scene with a police team, took custody of the body, completed legal formalities, and sent it for post-mortem examination. The incident has created panic and tension in the locality, and an investigation is underway. Police said Aqil's parents had died years earlier, and his only sister lives with her husband after marriage. Although Aqil himself was married, his wife Shaista had left him about six months ago and gone to her parental home with their three children. She was reportedly upset with his alleged substance abuse and criminal activities and had previously left him several times for similar reasons. Since then, Aqil had been living alone. Naseem, who lives in the same village, is divorced after his wife left him. According to local accounts, Aqil had been trying to persuade his wife to return home, but she refused and was allegedly in contact with Naseem over the phone. Witnesses also said that after hearing the screams, they saw Naseem attempting to run away from Aqil's house. Villagers speculate that Naseem wanted to remove Aqil from his path so he could marry Shaista himself, and that this may have led to the gruesome killing....
