Mamata says WB job scheme to be renamed after Mahatma
Kolkata, Dec. 19 -- West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that her government would rename its job guarantee programme after Mahatma Gandhi, in an announcement coming on a day the Lok Sabha passed a bill that seeks to replace the two-decade-old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA.)
"I feel ashamed that they have decided to remove Mahatma Gandhi's name from the NREGA programme, because I too belong to this country. We are now forgetting even the Father of the Nation," Banerjee said while addressing a business conclave in Kolkata.
On Thursday, the Lower House of Parliament passed the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, or VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025, which proposes 125 days of guaranteed rural work and replace the UPA-era MGNREGA amid strong protest by the opposition.
"We will now rename the Karmashree scheme of our state after Mahatma Gandhi. We are providing 75 days of work under this scheme. We are not beggars. We only want respect and nothing else. If you don't give respect to Gandhiji we will give him the due respect," she added, without naming anyone.P4...
