Kolkata, Aug. 19 -- West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced a rehabilitation scheme on Monday for migrant workers returning home from various Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled states where they are being detained on the suspicion that they are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. Some of these people were deported as well and brought back by the West Bengal police. "The cabinet passed the decision today. We have named the scheme Shramashree. We will give a one-time grant of Rs.5000 to each person to cover their travel expenses. Thereon, they will get Rs.5000 every month. The labour department will run the project," Banerjee told the media at Nabanna, the state secretariat. She said there are 2.24 million registered migrant workers in Bengal and all of them will be entitled to these benefits. "We have brought back 2,370 migrant families so far. I must point out that migrant workers from other states who are working in Bengal will not be entitled to these benefits," Banerjee said. The chief minister said every family will get free ration under the Khadya Sathi scheme and free treatment at state hospitals under the Swasthya Sathi project. Most of the detainees alleged that they were singled out only because they speak Bengali. Banerjee has targeted the BJP on the issue, alleging that bonafide citizens are being branded as Bangladeshis for political reasons in the run-up to the 2026 state assembly polls. Her party, the Trinamool Congress, has launched a year-long Bhasha Andolan (language movement). Banerjee alleged on Monday that the AIIMS at Kalyani in Nadia district is running a survey on mental health of citizens to help the Centre enforce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bengal. No official from AIIMS, Kalyani commented on the allegation. Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya alleged that Banerjee has politicised a health scheme. "The mental health survey is part of a national project aimed at helping citizens. It is unfortunate that Mamata Banerjee is politicising that as well," said Bhattacharya. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the state legislative assembly, accused Banerjee of launching the Shramashree scheme to secure minority votes in the coming elections. "This scheme is an eyewash. How can a family be run with Rs.5000 a month. Banerjee only wants to secure the minority votes."...
