Kochi, June 23 -- The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), the actors' body in the Malayalam film industry, has decided to hold internal elections within three months to choose a new leadership panel. The decision was taken at the general body meeting, which did not see the full participation of all its members, in Kochi on Sunday. According to people familiar with the matter, the unsatisfactory attendance at the meeting led to the decision to hold fresh elections. "It has been decided to hold fresh elections within three months. At the same time, many of us want actor Mohanlal to come back as the president of the executive committee. He has a clear perspective on how to manage affairs within AMMA, and many of us, including me, appreciate his efforts," actor Raja Sahib, one of the AMMA members who attended the meeting, said. Actor Mohanlal, who was the president of the last executive committee of the actors body, had resigned and the committee was disbanded in August 2024 following the publication of the Hema panel report, which highlighted the systemic sexual abuse of actors and technicians within the film industry.
