Mahendra sole nominee for U'khand BJP chief
Dehradun, July 1 -- Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt is set to be appointed as the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president again, with only him filing nomination for the post as the process to select the new state chief began on Monday.
State election officer for BJP and MLA Khajan Dass said: "The nomination process for the election of state president and eight national council members was completed today (on Monday) at the party headquarters in Dehradun."
"The timings for nomination were fixed from 10 am to 12 pm. Only Mahendra Bhatt filed the nomination for the post. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, former chief minister and MP Trivendra Singh Rawat, national media in-charge and Garhwal Lok Sabha MP Anil Baluni, Almora MP Ajay Bhatt, union minister of state Ajay Tamta were among those who proposed his name," he said.
"A formal announcement on the appointment will be made by central observer and Union minister Harsh Malhotra," he said. The formal announcement for his appointment will be made on Tuesday.
Mahendra Bhatt, a two-time MLA, was appointed as the state BJP chief in July 2022, four months after the BJP formed the government in the state. Bhatt, who was defeated by Rajendra Singh Bhandari of the Congress in the 2022 assembly election, had replaced Madan Kaushik.
Bhatt began his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1991. From 1998 to 2000, he served as the state secretary of the Uttaranchal Yuva Morcha in the undivided Uttar Pradesh. Following the formation of Uttarakhand (formerly Uttaranchal), he was appointed as the general secretary of the Yuva Morcha.
In 2002, during the first assembly election of Uttarakhand, Bhatt contested the Nandprayag seat and defeated Congress candidate Satendra Bartwal. He was subsequently named the state president of Yuva Morcha and also took on the responsibility of overseeing the Yuva Morcha's activities in Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra.
After taking on various roles within the party, Bhatt ran for the Badrinath Vidhan Sabha seat in 2017 and emerged victorious, defeating Congress candidate Rajendra Singh Bhandari. However, in the 2022 election, he was defeated by Bhandari in the same constituency, losing by a margin of over 2,000 votes. Bhatt has also spent 15 days in jail during the Ram Janmabhoomi Andolan and five days during the Uttarakhand Rajya Andolan....
