Maharajganj woman nabbed in Bhopal for duping 25 grooms
Gorakhpur/lucknow, May 22 -- The arrest of a 25-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj, in Bhopal on Tuesday, has exposed a case of serial matrimonial fraud wherein she duped 25 grooms in several states within just 7 months.
The woman, identified as Anuradha Paswan, was nabbed as she attempted to deceive her 26th victim. Investigations revealed Anuradha used to contact prospective grooms through WhatsApp by sending edited photos and fake biodata, promising marriage. After the wedding, she would flee with cash, jewellery and other valuables. She was allegedly part of a larger interstate gang.
Anuradha, who studied only up to middle school, was married in 2018 to Vishal from Rudrapur Shivnath village under Kulhi police station limits in Maharajganj district. Speaking to reporters, her father-in-law Rambhawan said, "Anuradha left the village in 2021. We haven't heard from her or Vishal since then. We only found out about her recent activities through the news. She has now been exposed for running a massive marriage scam."
According to circle officer Anirudh Kumar, Anuradha was employed at a private hospital in the district. The police have launched a detailed investigation into her activities and are coordinating with Bhopal police, who apprehended her, he said.
The police are also interrogating hospital staff and residents in Maharajganj to seek details of Anuradha's connections and the possible involvement of her husband, Vishal.
Her in-laws' neighbour Shiv Narayan Gupta said Anuradha's six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter are currently living with their grandfather and grandmother.
