LUCKNOW, July 30 -- Lucknow's Arju Singh won two gold medals at the 12th World Strengthlifting Championship in Pattaya, Thailand. While playing in the 76+ category of sub-junior group, Singh won his first gold medal to set up a world record in the incline benchpress before winning his second one in strengthlifting. Singh qualified for the World Championship while playing for Haryana as his father was posted in Army then before shifting to Lucknow on a permanent basis. "My family is my strength as everyone, including my grandfather Ashosk Singh and my father Amrendra Singh stood like rock behind my love for the sport," said Singh on his return to Lucknow on Tuesday. Varanasi's Vineet became the the first player from Uttar Pradesh to win a medal in the Cadet Taekwondo Asian Championship at Malaysia. Vineet defeated Korea's player Choi in a one-sided semi-final match with a score of 17-5 in the first round, but lost 29-17 and 26-19 respectively in the next two rounds and had to be satisfied with the bronze medal. Varanasi District Taekwondo Association's chief, Ashish Pratap Singh said that Vineet achieved this success in a very short period of training. "After selection, Ashish Pratap Singh, Manish Singh and Satya Vardhan Singh donated money to ensure Vineet's participation in the championship. Vikram Rai of Awadh Rifle Shooting Academy won gold and silver medals at the UP Pre-State Shooting Championship in New Delhi. Besides him, academy's rifle shooter Baljeet Singh also won silver Medal in 50m .22 Rifle prone position. Owais Ahmad won gold in senior master category trap and double trap events, whereas Garvit Pandey won a silver medal in double trap event in junior category. Some other shooters of the academy like Akhand Pratap Singh, Kunal Seth, Yasharth Mishra, Rudransh, Vinayak Yadav, Abhay Kumar Dubey etc. performed well and qualified for the upcoming competitions. Former UP No 1 and international tennis player Alok Bhatnagar of MVVNL-UPPCL will represent India in the forthcoming World Master's Tennis Championships, scheduled to be held in Lisbon Portugal from August 3 to 16. Alok will be participating in team championships as well as individual singles, doubles and mixed doubles in the 55+ age category. Alok has won many ITF titles. Other members of the team are Pawan Kapoor, Raj Dutt, Laxmi Kant Tanwar, Vibha Chaudhary, Manju Chauhan, Babita Mohan, Jagdish Tanwar, Deepak Bagora, Ajit Sail and Sunil Lulla. Techtro Club notched up 5-0 win against Aliganj Warrior Club in the District Football League-25, at the Chowk Stadium here on Tuesday. Utkarsh, Aryan, Aditya, Abhishek and Akshay scored a goal each. The second match of the day between Divine Club and Kalindi Club ended in a 1-1 draw. For Divine Club, Adil Mehdi Naqvi scored in the 59th minute, whereas Arsalan drew parity for Kalindi Club in the 77th minute....
