LUCKNOW, May 12 -- A dispute over the use of the title 'Maharaj' allegedly sparked a rivalry that culminated in the shooting of 35-year-old Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader Chetan Tiwari in Lucknow's Bazaar Khala area on Saturday night, police said. Police said the main accused, Vaibhav Bajpai alias Kaustubh Bajpai, was once a close associate of Tiwari. During questioning, Vaibhav allegedly claimed their relationship deteriorated in 2023 after Tiwari began using 'Maharaj' with his name despite objections from him and his family. He allegedly told investigators that the title 'Maharaj' was traditionally associated with his grandfather, Puttan Bajpai, and accused Tiwari of continuing to use it despite repeated protests. Police said the dispute escalated over time, leading to multiple FIRs and clashes between both sides. Investigators said Vaibhav also alleged that in 2024, Tiwari lodged two FIRs against him and his family members, further intensifying hostility. A police official said the rivalry turned into a struggle for dominance. Chetan Tiwari, son of Suresh Chandra Tiwari and a member of the BJYM Mahanagar executive committee, was allegedly shot on Saturday night while supervising construction of a parking space outside his house in Mehndiganj. "Vaibhav allegedly arrived at the spot and opened fire at Tiwari with a country-made pistol before anyone could react. Tiwari collapsed on the road after being hit by bullets. An employee, Udayraj Rawat, who rushed to save him, also came under fire but escaped unhurt," said DCP West Kamlesh Dixit. Police said the accused allegedly fled after threatening locals who gathered at the scene. Tiwari was later taken to hospital. In her complaint at Bazaar Khala police station, Tiwari's wife Mansi alias Shweta Tiwari alleged that she and her husband were sitting outside their house with their newborn daughter when Vaibhav arrived with five to six associates and allegedly threatened to kill the family before firing. Police said CCTV footage captured the incident, allegedly showing the attacker approaching on foot and firing at close range. Vaibhav has been arrested and sent to jail. Meanwhile, Tiwari, who is admitted to King George's Medical University (KGMU), is stated to be in stable condition....
