LUCKNOW, July 23 -- Lucknow University vice-chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai on Tuesday confirmed that he will take charge of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) next month. This was his first reaction a week after an official notification related to his appointment as the new director of the institute appeared in public domain. "Still figuring out the exact date of joining the IIM-C, but will certainly take up the new posting next month. I must keep three institutions in loop - LU, IIM-C and Banaras Hindu University. I was on a deputation to LU after taking leave from BHU...will get my leaves sanctioned for the next deputation (IIM-C)," said Rai. Many faculty members spoke about this at the executive meeting of Lucknow University Teachers' Association on Tuesday. One of the faculty members said a few selection committees formed by outgoing V-Cs in the past took decisions that were "disputed and questionable". These were apparently for the selection of candidates of their choice, they alleged. He said even the current selection committees only reveal the code and Annual Performance Index (API) of candidates for vacant pots, instead of names, which is against transparency. Another faculty member said that once the Raj Bhawan publishes the advertisement for the new V-C, no outgoing V-C takes policy decisions. "While several committee meetings are being conducted, most of them are selective. Some departments had CAS promotion committee meetings several times in last few years, while for some there was only one meeting. LU's Executive Council has at least four members who should have been elected members but were instated without going through the due process for the last five years. When Prof Rai has already been appointed IIM-C director, selection committees under him should be dissolved to ensure that 'just decisions' are taken in the university," said LUTA vice-president Arshad Ali Jafri....
