Lower volumes, higher value mark gold rush
Lucknow, April 20 -- The city's jewellery market saw a striking paradox on Akshaya Tritiya this year, with the lowest gold sales by weight in five years but the highest-ever value recorded. According to Chowk Sarrafa Association senior vice-president Adesh Jain, only 27 kg of gold was sold in 2026, compared to 30 kg in 2025, 34 kg in 2024, 28.7 kg in 2023 and 28 kg in 2022.
On Sunday, the rate of 10gm gold was Rs 158500 while the cost of 1 kg silver was Rs 256000
Despite the dip in volume, total trade value surged to a record Rs 42.80 crore this year, up from Rs 28.33 crore in 2025, Rs 25.33 crore in 2024, Rs 18 crore in 2023 and Rs 14.83 crore in 2022. Traders attributed the trend to rising gold prices and a growing investment mindset among buyers. Jain said the market was slow in the morning but picked up by evening, while silver sales touched 225 kg. Buyers opted for smaller quantities amid fears that prices could climb further. Eighteen-karat jewellery dominated sales, making up nearly 90%.
Association general secretary Vinod Maheshwari said lightweight jewellery such as tops and rings remained popular, while silver items, including anklets and coins, saw strong demand. Small investors preferred gold coins in the 1-5 gram range, reflecting cautious but steady investment....
