VARANASI, Aug. 8 -- Floods stopped dozens of looms and powerlooms installed in houses of Nakkhi Ghat, Shakkar Talab, Unchawa and Saraiya - the catchment areas of the Varuna, for the last several days. Irfan, a master weaver, says that the powerlooms and handlooms got submerged over a fortnight ago, and work has stopped since then. Iqbal Ahmed of Shakar Talab said that they were waiting for the water to subside so that they can start work. Actually, several localities on the banks of the Varuna are flooded since the river is swollen due to reverse flow from River Ganga. Babu Bhai says, every year floods come as a disaster. Electricity and water supply get disrupted. The floods have a devastating impact on the lives of weavers of Banarasi sarees. Mohammed Naeem said that the weavers work daily to make an earning. For the last several days, the houses of a large number of people in Saraiya and Nakkhi Ghat area have been inundated. According to the flood bulletin, 28 wards and 90 villages are affected and the flood has displaced over 8,016 people. Over 4,000 of them are living in the camps. htc...
