Lonely fast, silent end: Elderly woman dies alone after final call with daughter
Meerut, May 14 -- "I am fasting today. I've made dry potatoes; I'll eat them in a while. Don't feel like eating alone. Feeling a bit restless." These were the last words 70-year-old Anita Devi shared with her daughter Anjula during a phone call around 4 pm on May 8. Three days later, on May 11, Anita's decomposed body was found on her sofa. In the kitchen, a pan with untouched dry potatoes indicated she passed away shortly after preparing the meal. Relatives who entered the flat discovered the body, which had already begun to decompose and was emitting a foul odor.
Anita lived alone at her Parsvnath Pratibha Apartment in Moradabad.

The couple had three children: Anjula, who works in Delhi and lives in Noida; Deepak, an engineer based in London; and Sandeep, who also works in Delhi. Since her children were settled in different cities, Anita had been living alone in the apartment she moved into eight years ago, located along the Delhi highway in New Moradabad. Relatives shared that while Anjula and Sandeep occasionally visited during festivals, Deepak rarely came to India due to work commitments.
Anita often stayed in touch with her children over phone calls but had told neighbors that she hadn't spoken to Deepak or his children in a long time. Despite her age, Anita was healthy and active, regularly walking five kilometers to her maternal home in Guraitha village and back.
Majhola police station house officer RP Sharma said, "The body of the woman was found on May 11. The post-mortem revealed that she died in the evening of May 8 due to a sudden cardiac arrest."
Apartment guard Rohitash recalled, "On Thursday morning, she handed over the garbage to the staff as usual. We never saw her sick. When her relatives arrived on Sunday, we let them in. A foul smell was coming from the flat." He added that it was the relatives-not her children-who discovered her body. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, Anita's last rites were performed on Sunday night following the post-mortem....
